Three Sacred Trees

Behind Takino’o-jinja Shrine are three large Japanese cedars surrounded by a stone fence. The deity Tagorihime-no-Mikoto is said to have used them to descend from heaven to earth when she appeared before the renowned Buddhist monk Kukai (774–835) as he was visiting here. The original trees died one by one in 1699, 1747, and 1749, and were replaced with these new trees. The last tree to fall can still be seen rotting away on the ground near the three.
